VORTEX: the fourth and last rental  session is now closed, as all accommodation has been booked

VORTEX – new administrative headquarters of the FMEL

On 22 June 2020, the FMEL will move its administrative headquarters to the emblematic Vortex building. Situated in the heart of the university campus at Route de Praz-Véguey 29, 1022 Chavannes-près-Renens, the FMEL administration will be closer to and more easily accessible by residents.
However, due to Covid-19 FMEL administration is not open to the public but can be reached by phone during regular office hours (8.30 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1.30 p.m. to 4 p.m).

Rental of the VORTEX

The FMEL is pleased to announce the opening of the Vortex in 2020 which is considerably increasing availability as 828 additional rooms and studios are now being offered on the campus.

N.B. It is not possible to rent a whole flatshare together with friends. FMEL rents only individual accommodation.

For current residents who wish to move to the Vortex, kindly note that only an upgrade from a room to a studio is allowed and certain requirements need to be met. In order to be put on the waiting list for a move to a studio in the Vortex, please contact your house administrator.

Rental of other houses

For all other houses, availabilities are visible on the portal 2 months before the contract start date throughout the year, as current residents terminate their lease. A large amount of housing will be available in summer because during this period, the majority of students finish their stay at the FMEL. Book now

As an eligible student you can book your accommodation in just a few steps:
1. create an online profile (with the student's private e-mail address)
2. selection of the start date of the lease
3. choice of residence and housing
4. downloading documents. Identity card is required immediately, EPFL or UNIL registration documents (must be provided within 60 days of the lease start date ) - scholarship students (30 days after the lease start date)
The last step - which will make the reservation definitive - will be the payment of the guarantee deposit.

Here are some benefits you will have:

  • simplified rents payments
  • no need for guarantor, criminal record check or other official documents
  • presence of a house manager on site
  • lease on the 1st and 16th of each month (minimum duration 3 ½ months - max 5 years)
  • room for disable access and parking spaces on request

Covid-19 crisis: a donation of CHF 200,000 to benefit UNIL and EPFL students

The FMEL is well placed to know that certain students of the universities are facing serious financial difficulties following the Covid-19 crisis, in particular to pay their rent. With this donation, the foundation hopes to make a useful and appreciated contribution to solving the problems faced by a number of students from Lausanne's universities. This amount, divided equally between UNIL and EPFL, is intended to make an exceptional contribution to the support systems put in place by the two universities to help students with proven financial difficulties.

In February 2015, a new residence, with 123 fully equipped studios of 21.5m2, opened in Echandens, next to Rainbow. In September 2015, 54 rooms in flatshares will also be available.

Students from HES Vaud or the HEP are also welcome to apply for a studio or room in this FMEL residence.

To all our tenants

We would like to inform you that as from March 2014 all payments must be carried out with the BVR (payment slips) that you have received from the house manager or found in your letter boxes. More information on this can be found on our website under "Tenant – Living in homes – pay rent".

We kindly ask that you make the necessary arrangements.

If you continue to pay to our account with the BCV, instead of using the payment slips, the following penalties will be applied:

  • The first month (March) : you will receive an e-mail
  • The second month (April): CHF 10 of administrative charges will be billed
  • The third month (May): CHF 25 of administrative charges will be billed
  • The fourth month (June): CHF 50 of administrative charges will be billed and you will receive a warning notice

All rental payments must be received before the 5th of the month. For example, rent for March must be received before 5 March.

We only deal directly with our tenants and future tenants and not with parents or other third parties acting on behalf of the tenant.

From 2014 any forms of security deposit by a guarantor are not accepted.

 

As from 2014 no room change will be allowed (room to room), but only a change from room to studio will be authorized. The charges for such a change are CHF 250 and they must be paid in advance. The minimum stay before such a change is one year. The type of lease remains unchanged and a new security deposit must be paid. The previous security deposit will be released after check-out.
