general information
Lodge hours: Mr. Rittener house manager, is present every morning, between 7.30 – 8.00 a.m. On Mondays and Thursdays he is there in the afternoon too, between 1.30 – 2.00 p.m.
Description of site :
- 202 furnished single rooms approx. 14 to 15 m2, (a bed and mattress with mattress coversheet, a table, a chair, a bookshelf, a cupboard), in shared apartments of 2 or 3 with one bathroom (shower, WC, washbasin) or in shared apartments of 4 with two bathrooms (shower, WC, washbasin).
all apartments have shared fitted kitchen and living room.
telephone and TV socket in each room plus internet connection.
there are a few rooms available for the physically disabled.
48 furnished studio flats (a bed with mattress and mattress coversheet, a table, 3 chairs, a bookshelf, a cupboard). Private bathroom (shower, WC, washbasin) and a fitted kitchenette (3 hotplates, fridge)
telephone and TV socket in each studio flat, plus internet. Separate private kitchen with fridge and eating area.
Connections :
- all rooms and studio flats have hispeed internet connexion (see email sent to you by house manager for login instructions), TV socket (TV royalties – Billag must be paid by tenants who have a TV) Billlag AG and telephone socket (to get connection see instructions in e-mail sent by house manager at arrival)
Bedding, towels and dishes are NOT provided.
Rent – PERMANENT residents :
monthly rent for a room (all inclusive) varies between CHF 480.- and CHF 510.–.
monthly rent for a double studio flat occupied by two people (all inclusive) CHF 710
montly rent for a studio flat (all inclusive) is CHF 645.–.
for persons subject to foreigner tax, there is an additional CHF 30.-.
Lease :
- minimum 3 months. Termination in writing, a month in advance for the end of the month.
- maximum duration 5 years, or completion of Maters degree.
- security deposit is equivalent to apparoximately one and a half months’ rent. Reimbursed after check-out with house manager and at FMEL office only.- house rules
Room upkeep :
- residents are responsible for cleaning the communal areas (kitchen, living room, bathrooms and corridors) regularly in each apartment as well as his/her own room/studio.
- to do so, brooms, dusters and a hoover can be borrowed from the house manager. (Periodic checks are made by FMEL staff).
Quiet hours and other house rules :

- please respect neighbours and refrain from making noise outside (playing loud music, having discussion, throwing bottles into the container, slamming car doors, etc) after 10 p.m.
All residences are for both men and women
Temporary rentals during the summer :
- In the summer, from June onwards for reservations of 3 months or under, prices applicable are as per website with an additional Sf 200.- for a room and an additional Sf 250.- for a studio. A security deposit of Sf 400.- will need to be paid. Total rent and deposit must be paid in full in advance. If you are interested in this offer, you need to sign up on our website www.fmel.ch under “temporary rental” and then send an e-mail to the house of your first choice. You will be contacted roughly one month prior to your arrival date if we have a room to offer you. This offer is also valid in Bourdonnette, Cedres, Ochettes, and Marcolet and rentals in these houses are for full months only.
- for temporary residents, bedding kits can be hired; for further information, please contact the house manager.
- for groups (20 or more), contracts at a fixed rate may be negotiated. Contact the FMEL administration at the address triaudes@fmel.ch for more detailed information.

Conference and fitness room :
- conference rooms are available to house residents (reservation necessary), as well as fitness room (need room key to unlock).
Laundry :
- each building has a washing machine (coin operated – please contact house manager) and a dryer (free of charge).
Waste disposal :
- waste must be sorted as follows (bins are located in various areas, see map provided by house manager ) :
- household waste
- paper and cardboard
- glass
- PET
- aluminum
for large objects, please contact the house manager.
by systematicallly and properly sorting your waste, you contribute to protecting the environment.

Parking :
- there are no parking spaces for house residents**, however, outside parking spaces are available near EPFL (for more detailed information see EPFL welcome website.
Bikes :
- several bike racks are available for house residents. Obtain bike sticker from house manager.
